Peru Welcomes Its First Vivolight Multimodal P80 OCT System

Lima, Peru — On August 6, 2026, Vivolight Medical reached another important milestone in Latin America with the first clinical use of its Multimodal P80 OCT System in Peru at Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen.

The successful procedure marks a new step in the adoption of advanced intravascular imaging in Peru, bringing multimodal OCT technology into clinical practice to support more comprehensive assessment and decision-making in complex coronary intervention.

Located in Lima and operated by Peru’s Social Health Insurance system, EsSalud, Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen is one of Peru’s major high-complexity medical centers, providing specialized care for patients with complex cardiovascular disease.

A Long, Extensively Calcified RCA Lesion

The first clinical case involved a long, extensively calcified lesion in the mid right coronary artery (RCA), with calcification extending across almost the entire mid-RCA segment.

Given the extensive calcium burden and lesion length, detailed intravascular assessment was important to better understand the morphology and distribution of the disease and inform procedural planning.

Using the Vivolight Multimodal P80 OCT System, the clinical team obtained high-resolution intravascular imaging of the target vessel. Intelligent Calcium Assessment (ICA) helped characterize the extensive calcium burden along the mid-RCA, providing additional information on the distribution and severity of calcification to inform procedural planning.

Given the considerable length of the diseased segment, two long stents were deployed with overlap to cover the extended lesion.

The case highlights the value of combining high-resolution intravascular imaging with intelligent calcium assessment when navigating complex, extensively calcified coronary disease.

Beyond Imaging: A Multimodal Approach to PCI

Beyond high-resolution intravascular imaging, this first case also illustrated the value of the P80’s multimodal approach, bringing together complementary insights into plaque characteristics, calcium burden and lesion physiology to support a more comprehensive assessment of the target vessel.

The P80 integrates Index of Plaque Attenuation (IPA) for plaque characterization and stability assessment, Intelligent Calcium Assessment (ICA) for automated calcium analysis, and OCT-derived FFR (OCT-FFR) for functional assessment. Together, these multimodal capabilities provide anatomical, compositional and physiological perspectives within a unified OCT workflow, helping physicians build a more complete understanding of complex coronary lesions.

Building on this multimodal foundation, Vivolight is further extending its OCT platform toward AI-enabled clinical decision support through AI OCT, with the P80 serving as the hardware and imaging foundation for this intelligent workflow.
